Have More Fun With Outdoor Games

Do your children spend a lot of time indoors? If so, do you worry that they're not getting as much exercise as they should be going? Many kids love playing outdoors, but there's no harm in giving them a little encouragement to show them just how much fun they could be having.

It can sometimes seem as though habits have changed a lot in the past few decades. It was once the case that many of us would think that there was nothing more natural that to see children playing outdoors.

There seems to have been a shift towards indoor play. Why should this be the case? Technology can be held up as one reason. First televisions and now computers have meant that there are more things to entertain kids in the house.

Whether or not this is a good thing is certainly something that can be debated. Aside from the technological advances, there are other reasons too and these may reflect changes in society as a whole. Do we, as parents, feel more fearful for the safety of our children when they are not in the home?

This whole issue throws up some interesting concerns. The fact that kids are spending so much time taking part in activities that actually produce so little exercise was bound to have an impact. Child obesity levels, which have been rising in recent years, suggest that the impact can be seen all too clearly.

So what's to be done? Tackling these issues nationwide may be beyond our scope but it's certainly possible to think about our own children. How can we begin to encourage them to take more exercise?

One way of doing so is by showing them that exercise can be fun. Playing on a trampoline, for instance, can be great fun but will also be contributing to their fitness levels. By taking an alternative look at outdoor games, we can show them how much enjoyment is to be found.

Does this sound like it would be expensive? It needn't be - budget toys can help to brighten up a garden and inspire children. If you want to buy more expensive games and equipment then these are obviously available too.

Take the time to demonstrate to your children just how much more fun outdoor play could be!
